"BACKLIGHT In 1937 most of Arlington County's businesses were of the service variety: grocery stores, laundries, etc. Entrepreneur Roderick Henderson Sr.'s business was sevice-driven, and then some. Henderson's got started on 1317 N. 19th St. in Rosslyn, in 1927, delivering ice and coal to Northwest Washington. There was also Henderson's Express and Transfer, which offered moving services and operated out of the same site, and if that wasn't enough there was a 40-foot counter where you could order a hot dog or a bowl of beans. When the Depression hit, Henderson was known to extend credit to customers he knew could not pay him back, yet he managed to keep on two three-man moving crews, even when there was nothing for them to do but sit at the counter and dream. Henderson's moved to South Arlington in the '60s,closing down everything save the moving business. Roderick Jr. has been running the company for nearly 30 years."
